Start with the person and how the chair will be used
Before comparing products, describe the situation honestly:
- Who propels the chair? A user with good upper-body strength may self-propel a manual chair. If a carer will do most of the pushing, an attendant-propelled chair with smaller rear wheels may suit better.
- How long is the person seated each day? Occasional short trips have very different requirements from all-day sitting, which raises the priority of pressure care and postural support.

- Self-propelled manual wheelchair — large rear wheels with hand rims so the user can push themselves. Best for people with the strength, endurance and coordination to propel safely.
- Transit (attendant-propelled) wheelchair — smaller rear wheels, pushed by a carer. Lighter and more compact, but the user cannot self-propel.

Getting the measurements right
Poor sizing is the most common problem with a wheelchair. A chair that is too wide encourages leaning and poor posture; one that is too narrow causes pressure at the hips. The core measurements an assessor will consider include:
- Seat width — enough clearance at the hips without excess space that lets the person slump sideways.
- Seat depth — supports the thighs without pressure behind the knees.
- Lower-leg length — sets footplate height so the feet are supported and the thighs are not lifted or dangling.
- Backrest height — matched to the trunk support the person needs.
- Seat-to-floor height — affects transfers, foot propulsion (if used) and whether the chair fits under tables.

Once the type and size are settled, compare these:
- Cushion — the standard cushion supplied with a chair is often basic. For anyone at pressure-injury risk or seated for long periods, a pressure-redistributing cushion selected on clinical advice matters as much as the chair itself.
- Footplates — swing-away or removable footplates ease transfers and getting close to furniture; correct height prevents pressure and poor posture.
- Armrests — fixed, removable or height-adjustable; removable arms help with side transfers.
- Brakes — must be reachable and usable by whoever applies them; wheel-lock brakes secure the chair, and attendant brakes help a carer on slopes.
- Wheels and tyres — larger wheels handle rough ground better; puncture-proof tyres reduce maintenance.
- Weight and folding — confirm someone can actually lift and stow the folded chair for the vehicle it will travel in.
- Anti-tip devices and safety accessories — consider on clinical advice, particularly for active self-propellers or people who lean.
