What makes a wheelchair bariatric?
- Higher SWL — 150–300kg depending on the model
- Wider seat — typically 50–56cm to accommodate wider users
- Reinforced frame — heavier gauge steel; reinforced joints and cross-brace
- Stronger wheels — spokes and rims rated for higher loads
- Wider axle — to carry the wider seat without excessive lean
Seat width and user comfort
Measure the widest point of the user's hips and thighs while seated. Add 2–3cm each side. A 50cm seat typically fits users up to approximately 130–145cm hip width; a 56cm seat accommodates wider users. Too narrow causes pressure and skin issues; too wide prevents reaching the wheels for self-propulsion.
Bariatric transit vs self-propelled
Bariatric transit wheelchairs are pushed by a carer — lighter, easier to transport. Bariatric self-propelled wheelchairs have large rear wheels for independent use but are heavier. If the user is non-ambulant and always carer-assisted, a transit model is often the better choice.
NDIS funding for bariatric wheelchairs

Do I need an occupational therapist assessment?
For low-cost assistive technology (generally under $1,500) you usually do not. Mid-cost items may need written advice from an OT. Ask us and we’ll advise — or request a quote and we’ll guide you.
Are these items GST-free?
Many mobility, bathroom and daily-living aids are GST-free medical aids under Schedule 3 of the GST Act when designed for people with an illness or disability. We show the correct GST on your invoice.
