Transfer bench — how it works
A transfer bench spans both inside and outside the bath. The user sits on the outside section, slides across the seat into the bath, lifts their legs over the edge (using a separate leg lifter if needed), and is now seated inside without ever stepping over. This eliminates the highest fall risk in bath use — the step-over.
Key measurements
- Bath width — measure the interior width of your bath. Transfer benches must span the full width with legs inside and outside.
- Bath height — affects the leg height setting needed on the bench
- User weight — check SWL rating
Should you consider a shower instead?
For many users with significant mobility limitations, a shower recess with a shower chair is safer than modifying a bath. If you are deciding between the two, an OT home assessment can advise on which is safer for your specific bathroom layout.
