Bed Rails, Grab Bars & Bedroom Mobility Aids Australia
Bed Rails, Grab Bars & Bedroom Mobility Aids Australia
Safe movement in and around the bed is one of the most common challenges for older Australians and people with disability. Bed rails, grab bars, adjustable backrests and repositioning aids help users sit up, transfer, and reposition safely — reducing carer strain and fall risk.

Bed grab rail vs bed pole — what's the difference?
| Bed grab rail / bar | Bed pole (floor-to-ceiling) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fitting | Slides under mattress or clamps to bed frame | Pressure-fit between floor and ceiling |
| Primary use | Repositioning in bed; sit-to-stand assist from mattress edge | Stand-to-sit transfer; stability beside the bed |
| Portability | Easy to move between beds or rooms | Less portable; semi-permanent fit |
| Best for | Independent bed mobility; getting in/out | Standing transfer support beside the bed |
Adjustable backrests
A back rest wedge or adjustable back rest elevates the upper body in bed — useful after surgery, for respiratory conditions, or for anyone who needs to sit up in bed without placing full load on a carer. Most clip to the mattress or have a non-slip base.
Repositioning aids
A bed rope ladder is attached to the foot of the bed. The user pulls hand over hand to sit up from lying, without needing a carer's assist. Useful for anyone with abdominal, hip, or back surgery who cannot push up from the mattress.
A leg lifter is a stiff loop that goes around the foot. The user lifts their leg into and out of bed using the handle — important after hip surgery when bending at the hip is restricted.
Over-bed tables
An over-bed or chair table allows meals, devices, and tasks to be done without the user needing to lean forward or get out of bed. Height-adjustable and tilt-adjustable models are available.
Safety considerations for bed rails
- Full-length side rails on home beds present entrapment risk — clinical assessment required before use
- Short grab bars (used for repositioning, not containment) are safe for home use when fitted securely
- Always test stability of the grab rail or pole before the user puts weight on it
- For users with dementia or confusion, seek an OT assessment before installing any bed rail

Yes. Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants can buy directly from CareAid Supplies — you do not need a registered provider. Agency-managed participants must use a registered provider. We issue a compliant tax invoice for fast plan-manager payment.
Do I need an occupational therapist assessment?
For low-cost assistive technology (generally under $1,500) you usually do not. Mid-cost items may need written advice from an OT. Ask us and we’ll advise — or request a quote and we’ll guide you.
Are these items GST-free?
Many mobility, bathroom and daily-living aids are GST-free medical aids under Schedule 3 of the GST Act when designed for people with an illness or disability. We show the correct GST on your invoice.
