What to look for
- Bucket size — most use a standard 7-litre pail. Check replacement pails are available.
- Seat height — should match the user's standard toilet height. Adjustable models are more flexible.
- Drop-down arms — some commodes have arms that fold or drop for lateral transfers.
- Weight capacity — standard models are 110–135kg. Heavy duty models 150–200kg+.
- Hygiene — stainless steel frames and removable seat pads are easier to clean in high-use settings.
Cleaning and hygiene
Empty and clean the bucket after every use. Use a mild disinfectant. Allow the bucket and seat to dry before replacing. If the commode is used multiple times per day, consider a model with a removable seat and separate pail that can be bleach-cleaned.
NDIS funding
Commode chairs are common AT items funded under NDIS and Home Care Packages. Standard bedside commodes are typically Low Cost AT. Mobile shower commodes require an OT assessment and prior approval.
