Grab rail placement in the bathroom
Toilet
One rail on the dominant side of the user (typically right), at a height of 700–750mm from the floor, positioned so the user can grip it while seated and use it to push up. A second rail on the other side adds extra support.
Shower
One vertical rail at the entry for balance while stepping in and out. One horizontal or angled rail inside for support while showering. Position at a reachable height for the user — typically 850–950mm from the floor for the horizontal rail.
Bath
One or two rails along the bath side for lowering in and pushing up. Bath grab rails must be wall-mounted into studs or solid substrate — not onto tiles alone.
Installation requirements
- Grab rails must be fixed into wall studs or solid blocking — tiles and plasterboard alone will not hold under load
- For rental properties or temporary use, consider a portable suction-cup grab bar (lower load rating)
- For NDIS home modifications, a builder or handyman registered to do AT modifications must install — check with your plan manager

Grab rail supply and installation is commonly funded as a Home Modification under NDIS and Home Care Packages. The rail itself is AT; the installation labour may be funded separately as a modification. Confirm with your plan manager.
