Start with the assessment, not the catalogue

Before any equipment is chosen, the person's transfer needs should be assessed by an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or other suitably qualified professional, and documented in a handling plan. The plan is what equipment serves — not the other way around.

A useful assessment considers:

  • Weight-bearing ability — can the person take weight through their legs reliably, sometimes, or not at all?
  • Cooperation and cognition — can they follow instructions and predict what will happen next?
  • Pain, skin integrity and medical factors — fragile skin, recent surgery, spinal precautions or pressure areas change what is safe.
  • The task — bed to chair, chair to commode, floor recovery, repositioning in bed, or vehicle transfer.
  • The environment — floor surface, clearances, furniture height, and whether a mobile lifter can actually reach.
  • The workers — how many are available, their training, and their own physical capacity.

The person's ability can change day to day and across a decline or recovery. A handling plan should be reviewed when circumstances change, not just at set intervals.

Match the equipment to the transfer

Manual handling aids are not interchangeable. Each addresses a different transfer profile, and using the wrong category is a common source of harm. The table below is a starting point for discussion with your clinician — never a selection tool on its own.

Get slings and safe working load right

With lifters, most serious incidents trace back to two things: the sling and the load rating. Both deserve specific attention.

  • Sling compatibility — a sling must be approved for use with the specific lifter and appropriate to the transfer and the person. Slings are not universal across brands or models. Confirm size, style (toileting, hammock, standing) and attachment method against the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Safe working load (SWL) — the lowest SWL in the system sets the limit. If the lifter is rated higher than the sling, the sling's rating applies. Never exceed the SWL, and account for the person's actual weight, not an estimate.
  • Condition — inspect slings before every use for fraying, worn stitching and damaged clips. Quarantine anything doubtful.

Build the supporting system

Equipment is one part of a system that also includes training, maintenance and a clear plan. A lifter with a flat battery, an untrained worker or no charging routine is not a working control.
