Patient Lifter Buying Guide: Choosing a Hoist and Sling Safely

A patient lifter is not a single product you can buy from a specification sheet. It is a system — the lifter, the sling, the environment, the handling plan and the trained workers who use it — and every part has to fit the others. When they do, a hoist prevents injuries to both the person being moved and the people moving them, and makes safe transfers possible where they otherwise would not be. When one part is mismatched — the wrong sling, an untrained carer, too little floor clearance — the result can be a serious fall or injury.

This guide explains the main types of lifter, how slings and safe working load work together, and the environment and training questions to settle before you buy. It is general information only. A lifter is a system, not just a machine

Before comparing hoists, assess the whole transfer:

  • Type of transfer — bed to chair, floor recovery, toileting, bathing, or repositioning. Each has different requirements.
  • The person's needs — weight, height, body shape, muscle tone, pain, cooperation, skin condition and head or trunk control. These drive sling choice as much as the lifter.
  • Who will operate it — how many workers, their training, and the organisation's assessed handling plan.
  • The environment — floor surface, space to manoeuvre, furniture, doorway widths, and clearance under the bed or chair for a mobile hoist's legs.

Options across the wider manual-handling picture — slide sheets, transfer boards, standing aids and lifters — are not interchangeable. A lifter is chosen only when the assessment calls for it.

The main types of lifter

  • Mobile floor lifter (full-body hoist) — wheels around the room and lifts a person in a full sling. Flexible and moves between rooms, but needs floor clearance, manoeuvring space and a suitable floor surface.
  • Stand-aid / sit-to-stand lifter — supports a person who can bear some weight and follow instructions to move between seated positions. Suited to selected, assessed weight-bearing users only — not a substitute for a full hoist where weight-bearing is unsafe.
  • Ceiling hoist (track system) — runs on a fixed track, saving floor space and easing transfers in tight rooms. Requires installation by a qualified installer, structural checks and planning, and is usually a fixed feature of the room.
  • Bathing / pool and specialised lifters — designed for specific environments with appropriate materials and controls.
  • Bariatric lifters — higher safe working load and larger slings for heavier users, sized to assessment.

Slings and safe working load — the safety core

The sling is where most lifter incidents begin, so treat it with the same care as the hoist:

  • Approved combination — the sling must be approved by the manufacturer for use with that specific lifter. Mixing brands or unapproved combinations is unsafe.
  • Right type and size — sling type (full-body, toileting, standing, etc.) and size must suit the person and the transfer. A sling that fits one person may be wrong for another.
  • Safe working load — the lowest safe working load in the system — lifter, spreader bar, sling and any attachment — is the limit that applies. Never exceed it, and choose with a margin.
  • Condition — inspect slings for fraying, worn stitching, damaged loops and faded labels before every use; withdraw any damaged sling immediately.
  • Attachment — confirm loops are correctly and fully engaged before taking any load, following the manufacturer's method.

Environment, power and emergencies

  • Space and clearance — confirm the hoist manoeuvres in the room and its legs pass under the bed or chair; measure doorways.
  • Floor and surface — a mobile hoist needs a suitable, level surface; thick carpet or thresholds can impede it.
  • Charging and battery — powered lifters need a charging routine; a flat battery mid-transfer is a hazard. Understand battery indicators and spare-battery arrangements.
  • Emergency lowering — know the manual or emergency lowering method before use, in case of power or mechanical failure.
  • Storage — plan where the lifter and slings live so they are available, charged and clean.

A pre-purchase and pre-use checklist

  • Transfer type and the person's needs assessed by an OT or physiotherapist
  • Lifter type matched to the transfer and environment
  • Room space, floor clearance and doorway widths confirmed (or ceiling-track installation planned with a qualified installer)

  • Worker training and competency arranged before first use

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any sling with any hoist? No. The sling must be approved by the manufacturer for use with that specific lifter, and be the right type and size for the person and transfer. Unapproved combinations are unsafe. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the person's handling plan.

What is the difference between a full hoist and a stand-aid? A full-body hoist lifts a person entirely in a sling and suits people who cannot bear weight safely. A stand-aid supports a person who can bear some weight and follow instructions to move between seated positions. Using a stand-aid for someone who cannot weight-bear safely is dangerous.

How many people are needed to operate a lifter? It depends on the person, the transfer and the assessment. Some transfers require two trained workers. The manual-handling plan should state the required number; never reduce it for convenience.

Do staff need training to use a hoist? Yes. Competency training on the specific equipment is essential before use, alongside the handling plan. This general guide does not replace hands-on training.

How often should a lifter and slings be inspected? Slings should be checked before every use and withdrawn if damaged. Lifters require scheduled inspection and servicing per the manufacturer and any statutory requirements, with records kept. Quarantine any faulty equipment immediately.
