Moving a person from bed to chair, chair to commode, or floor to bed is one of the highest-risk activities in any Australian care setting. Manual handling is consistently reported as a leading cause of workplace injury in health and community care, and a poorly matched transfer aid can shift that risk straight onto the person being moved. The category names — slide sheet, transfer board, standing aid, lifter — describe very different tasks and very different levels of assessed ability. This guide compares them so you can ask better questions, but comparison is where selection begins, not where it ends.

Start with the transfer, not the product
Before you look at any equipment, describe the transfer in plain terms: where the person starts, where they need to end up, how much weight they can safely take through their legs, whether they can follow instructions, and how much space, floor grip and furniture clearance you have. A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can assess weight-bearing capacity, pain, skin integrity, cognition and cooperation — the factors that actually determine which category is appropriate.
The same person may need different aids for different transfers, or different aids on different days. Someone who stands with a sit-to-stand aid in the morning may need a full hoist when fatigued or unwell. Build flexibility into the plan and review it when the person changes.

Slide sheets and boards: the lower-tech end
Slide sheets reduce friction so a person can be repositioned or moved across a flat surface with far less force. They are for sliding, not lifting, and should generally be removed after the manoeuvre rather than left in place, where they can become a slip hazard. Check the size for the bed and person, whether the sheet is single-patient or reusable, and the laundering requirements for infection control.
Transfer boards bridge a short seated gap — for example, bed to wheelchair — for someone who can sit unsupported, take some weight through their seat and follow a sequence of steps. Confirm the board's length, safe working load and surface, and that both surfaces are stable and close in height. A board is not appropriate for a person who cannot hold a seated position safely.
Standing aids and lifters: the higher-support end
Standing aids and sit-to-stand lifters support a person who can bear some weight through their legs, grip a handle and cooperate with the movement. They range from simple non-powered turntables and rails to powered sit-to-stand machines with a support sling. The person's ability to weight-bear reliably is the deciding factor — a standing aid used with someone who cannot is dangerous.
Mobile and ceiling lifters (hoists) take the full load for a person with little or no weight-bearing ability. A hoist is a system, not a single product: the lifter, the sling, the environment, the trained worker and the handling plan all have to match. The sling must be approved for that specific lifter and appropriate to the transfer, the safe working load must never be exceeded, and staff need training plus a known emergency-lowering procedure.
Build a transfer plan, not a shopping list
Equipment is only as safe as the plan around it. Frequently asked questions
Can I choose a transfer aid from a comparison table alone? No. A table narrows the options, but the person's weight-bearing ability, pain, skin, cognition, cooperation, the environment and the number of workers determine what is safe. That judgement belongs to a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or other qualified professional.
Is a standing aid safer than a hoist because the person "does more"? Not inherently. A standing aid used with someone who cannot reliably weight-bear is more dangerous than a correctly matched hoist. "Doing more" is only a benefit when the person can safely do it.
Do slings work across different lifters? Do not assume so. Use only a sling approved for that specific lifter and appropriate to the transfer. Check the manufacturer's compatibility guidance and your organisation's assessed handling plan.
How often should a transfer plan be reviewed? At issue, whenever the person's ability, environment or goals change, after any incident or near miss, and at scheduled intervals. Escalate faults immediately and follow your maintenance and inspection obligations.
